Maddi · What I'm Reading

Kids Summer Reading Club {Babysitters Club}

Hi! Today is the first of our Kids Summer Reading Club. If your kiddos are anything like mine, they are going to need some fun books to encourage reading over the summer. At our school on the first day, the principal serves ice cream to students who read at least four times a week for at least 20 minutes a time. Maddi has become a little book worm lately and I love finding fun chapter books for her to read. I also see first hand the importance of kids learning to love to read and reading throughout the summer consistently.

Maddi loved The Babysitters Club: Kristy’s Great Idea.

She read through the book in a couple of days and liked that it was in comic book form.

What prompts Kristy to start the Babysitters Club?

“Because Kristy loves babysitting.”

How does keeping a record of their babysitting jobs help the girls?

“It helps them by learning what to do. They kept a record of how much money they made and what they did while they were babysitting. They kept a record of what games they played. They always looked back at their book. Sometimes their jobs were funny and they wanted to know how the other girls did, so they wrote it in a notebook.”

Each girl has a job within the club that suits their personality. Which job suits your personality?

“Probably Claudia’s job. She was really funny and her job in the club was the President’s Helper. She was the Vice President. I am a helper. Being President would be too much work, but being the Vice President would be just the right amount of work.”

What’s your favorite part of the book and why?

“When they joined together for the Babysitters Club party. They all brought vegetables and fruits and pizza and they had a sleepover.”

What type of club would you like to form with your friends and why?

“A basketball club. We would work on shooting hoops, dribbling, passing, working on tricks and we would ALWAYS play “Bump”. Basketball is our favorite thing to play together.”

Which babysitting job do you think is the hardest? Which job do you think was the easiest? Why?

“I think the hardest job would be when Kristy had to babysit the dogs. The dogs were really rowdy and she doesn’t know dogs that well. The easiest job would be when she babysat her own brothers. But one brother did lose the keys to their house. Babysitting is hard work.”

*BONUS QUESTION…because I had to know**Who would you recommend this book to?

“My friends would like this book. My friends that are boys would NOT like this book. I think girls would like the book better than the boys.”

Our next book will be Because of Winn Dixie.

    1. Thank you Andrea! Going to the library in the summer is SO much fun! Our library puts on the best summer program and the kids go crazy over it. They have special guest speakers come in (Reptile Man) and make different toys and do fun science experiments. I love that you used to do this with you boys as well! Have a great day Andrea!
